Starter Pack

Social content and visual identity for Facebook Watch’s first scripted comedy

Concept / Art Direction / Design / Retouching

The cast is full of over-the-top characters, but it has to be unmistakably clear that Ayana is the protagonist of this story.

Starter Pack uses meme culture to make a larger statement about art and society. Who gets to decide what art is? Who are the gatekeepers? What defines an “artist”? The cast was announced prelaunch via Kehinde Wiley-inspired portraits.

Each character is introduced with a “Starter Pack” meme. This further establishes the characters’ identities, gives them context within the story, and reinforces that Starter Pack has meaning beyond just the show’s title.

I directed the principle cast in an in-character photoshoot for use in social assets for before, during, and after Starter Pack’s run. Above are some selects from the shoot.

For the oil painting-style character cards (below), I had the each cast member imitate a classical portrait pose that would give a nod to their character’s personality.
